Leveraging Artificial Intelligence During The Summer Planning Period
With summer just around the corner, many food banks and pantries across the country are preparing for the seasonal slowdown in food drive activity that typically occurs between spring and the back-to-school and holiday giving seasons. While donation activity may temporarily dip, this quieter period can be one of the most valuable times of the year for organizations to evaluate operations, strengthen outreach strategies, and prepare for the busy months ahead. Taking time now to review what worked well during the past year, and where there may be opportunities to improve, can help set your team up for a stronger and more efficient fall and winter season.
If you haven’t yet, make sure you’re fully set up on our #GiveHealthy platform so that when busy season picks up, your ready to offer drive organizers and donors an easy and free virtual food drive option.
One area we continue to see growing interest in across the hunger relief sector is the use of artificial intelligence and digital tools to streamline operations and increase community engagement. From helping generate content ideas for social media and donor outreach to organizing volunteer communication and analyzing campaign performance, AI tools are quickly becoming valuable resources for nonprofit teams of all sizes. While technology can never replace the human relationships that drive hunger relief work, it can help save time, reduce administrative workload, and allow organizations to focus more energy on serving their communities.
Interested in what AI thinks about itself and how it will change the food banking world?
Our CEO, Patrick O’Neill—who also serves as the Board Chair of Food Bank News—recently explored this question by going straight to the source. He prompted the world’s leading AI models (ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude) to share their roadmap for the future of our sector.
While the AI models predict a shift toward predictive logistics and sophisticated data architecture, the heart of the message remains the same: Human connection and community trust are irreplaceable.
At #GiveHealthy, we see technology as a way to amplify the incredible spirit of traditional food drives.
By adding a digital and data-driven layer to the way we give, we can:
✅ Support food banks with cleaner, actionable data.
✅ Ensure the most needed, healthy items are prioritized in every drive.
✅ Help our partners operate with even greater efficiency and impact.
The goal isn’t to replace the tradition of giving, but to provide the tools that allow it to thrive in a digital age. We are proud to be part of an ecosystem that embraces innovation to better serve our neighbors.

What AI Has to Say About AI in Food Banking
Artificial intelligence is beginning to play a larger role in hunger relief, with food banks exploring how AI tools can improve forecasting, logistics, fundraising, and client support. Food Bank News Board Chair Patrick O’Neill prompted three leading AI models and asked: How will AI affect food banks in the next three to five years? How can food banks prepare? And what are three to five specific actions food banks can take right now to get ready? The models predicted that AI could significantly transform food banking in the coming years by helping organizations better forecast demand, optimize food distribution routes, identify service gaps, personalize outreach to clients and donors, and reduce administrative workload. Ultimately he models consistently emphasized that AI should be used to enhance human decision-making, not replace the compassion, trust, and community relationships that are essential to hunger relief work.

A Pioneering Model of Hunger Relief Expands
A pioneering hunger-relief model focused on dignity, choice, and long-term food security is expanding in the United States through the growth of the Food Club Network in Michigan. Rather than operating like a traditional food pantry, the model allows members to shop for healthy foods in a grocery store-style setting using a low-cost monthly membership, helping reduce stigma while increasing access to nutritious options. Leaders behind the expansion say the approach is designed to create a more sustainable and empowering experience for families facing food insecurity, while also strengthening community connection and financial stability. As interest in innovative hunger-relief strategies grows nationwide, advocates believe this membership-based model could help reshape how food assistance is delivered in communities across the country.

Nationwide Hunger Relief Campaign Returns to Support Local Food Banks
In April, Feeding America, Walmart, and Sam’s Club launched the 13th annual “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” campaign to support food banks across the United States. The initiative encourages shoppers to donate through in-store purchases, register donations, and direct giving, with proceeds helping local food banks provide meals to families experiencing food insecurity. Organizers say the campaign has helped provide billions of meals over the past two decades and continues to play an important role as demand for food assistance remains elevated nationwide.
